Renting vs. Buying

Sometimes the simplicity of “enjoying nature” becomes a monumental task - with decisions about maps, books, tents, stoves, and sleeping bags as you gear up for a trip. At Mountain High, we try to orient our customers to a simple house philosophy at the onset of their shopping: GET OUT! The outdoors is about just that, the outdoors. Our staff is both experienced and tested in every facet of our product lines, and can fit you in the best gear for your next trip. Should you Rent, or Buy? Here is our our RENTAL PROGRAM may help you:

1) Renting Gear allows you to discern your likes/dislikes.
Top Load or Multi Point Packs?Wedge, Dome or Hoop Tents? Slip or Board lasted rock climbing shoes ? Each answer provides its own set of advantages. Knowing how you and your body work with a specific type of tent/shoe/pack/etc, and incorporating that knowledge into making a confident purchase in the future makes renting an inexpensive option to test out what you read about or hear from friends.

2) Seasonal Adaptability
Any experienced camper knows the key to a successful trip is the correct gear. That single wall tent you bought for a multi-day expedition is an awesome piece of gear, but a spring weekend in the Sipsey Wilderness would be misery inside it. Seasons effect what gear you need to bring, especially tents, and we provide tents in all shapes, sizes and builds. We also rent various size packs too, so the winter pack that carries your heavy insulation can take a break while you cruise in a smaller, lighter summer pack.

3) Simplicity
Our GET OUT! philosophy isn’t a gimmick, we mean it. We take pride in our ability to not only get you the gear you want, but make the experience hassle free and convenient. Don’t know how to pitch a tent, well show you. Backpack seems a bit off? We’ll custom fit you. Our goal is to remove all obstacles in the way of our customers enjoying the outdoors as much as we do. Note: We do not rent sleeping bags, but we stock plenty of styles, sizes and price ranges for purchase. If you need to rent an item that we don't carry, our partner UAB Outdoor Pursuits also has a great Rental Program.

You may reserve your tents, packs, and/or poles up to 60 days in advance, and pick up items a couple of days before your trip. Everything is due back the day after your trip, but you may call for an extension. Your convenience is important to us. Here are our prices for this season (2-day rental):
