There are two types of European travel- luxury and backpacking. If you are going to one city and staying in the same place for a week, a rolling suitcase will be fine. However, if you will be traveling throughout a country or across international borders by train, I strongly recommend a rolling backpack, simply because most train stations have stairs that you will have to carry your bags up and down.
Clothing in Europe is really a matter of personal preference. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, and if you will be visiting religious spaces you should dress modestly. You will also want some clothes that are nice enough to go out to eat at nice restaurants. Khakis and button-down shirts for men, dresses and skirts for women are appropriate for evening. You will want to bring clothes that don’t wrinkle easily.
Shorts
Pants
Underwear-synthetics are good for female backpackers
Shirts- bring at least one long-sleeve even in the summer because trains and
museums can be cold.
Nice clothes for evening
Walking shoes-sneakers or a sturdy sandal- the best way to explore European
cities is on foot.
Pajamas
***most women will want to buy clothes and shoes, so leave room.
For women, a purse that you can carry close in front of you that zippers and has a flap is ideal. Men, there are lots of options for carrying money and passports- Eagle Creek makes good ones. Don’t carry a wallet in your back pocket- a front cargo pocket or money belt will work. Pickpockets are rampant in Southern Europe- Italy and Spain in particular. You should also carry a backpack or over-the-shoulder bag for other belongings. People traveling in groups can consolidate.

Guidebook/Maps-Rick Steve’s is best for medium to high budget- Lonely
planet for low budget. www.hostelworld.com
is great for booking hostels.
Money and Passport (leave passport in hotel if it is secure- don’t if
you are staying at a
hostel). It’s a good idea to keep money in different places in case of
emergency.
Travel insurance card
Sunscreen

Something for rain- just check the weather like you would here- you can always
buy emergency umbrellas.
*many women will be tempted to bring hairdryers, straighteners, etc. That’s fine but do so at your own risk. You will need an adapter and a converter for Europe and many appliances like this pop anyway and are useless. If you will be there longer than two weeks, you may want to buy those appliances in country. They aren’t expensive. Nicer hotels should have everything you need.
